Tips on how to choose and what to think about when choosing a Surf School in Fuerteventura
In the last 7 years the surf industry in Fuerteventura has increased dramatically, specially the number of surf schools. Going from three or four that where not very active in 2003 to somewhere around 25 and possibly more.
Is difficult to know exactly why this has happened, several factors like the general growth in popularity of the sport of surfing and the fact that Fuerteventura is a big island with very little population, great weather and plenty beaches have helped a lot.
Another important element ist the fact that Fuerteventura its part of the European Union which makes it very easy for any European to come to the island as a surf tourist or as teacher. By the way this surf school Fuerteventura told me that they are looking for a surf teacher.
There has also been a big increase in the number of flights that connect the island of Fuerteventura with the continent specially with Ireland, UK, Germany and Italy. This flights seem to be cheaper every year.
So you have plenty of Surf Schools in Fuerteventura to choose from. You have all ranges from really big surf schools that bring 20 people to the beach to small ones of just one guy with a van that has his own little company.
What should you take into consideration when choosing a specific surf school
You have two main ways to plan your trip.
- Search first for a place to stay. There are plenty of apartments, hotels etc, it will not be difficult to find something quite cheap if do a bit of google research. After you found a place to stay then go for the surf school.
- Find a surf school in Fuerteventura that offers a package of hostel and surf lessons.
Regarding to the type of surf school that you should go for there are several important things to take into consideration.
- Does the surf school have an insurance policy?. Some small schools haven't done all their paper work. This does not mean that all small surf shools have this problem, but it could happen.
- How much attention will you get from the surf teacher?. Some times there is simply to many people for each teacher, other times the teacher just wants to surf too (his boss is not watching) so he will put you in the water and won't pay any attention, or maybe they will give you a bit of attention in the first minutes but then they will start surfing.
